In terms of urban transportation, electric-assisted bicycles can be said to have great potential. The rapid popularity of e-bikes around the world is testament to this. In fact, it is estimated that the global e-bike industry will be worth more than $120 billion by 2030, with many industry players coming from China.
The number of new electric vehicle solutions coming out of China is dizzying, and it's clear that these manufacturers are eyeing expansion into Western markets such as Europe and the United States by launching their own models. Take DYU and its latest urban commuter vehicle, the T1, as an example. DYU is one of many brands owned by Shenzhen Dayu Intelligent Travel Technology, a Chinese technology company that has sold more than 1 million electric-assisted bicycles and travel equipment globally.
The DYU brand is especially known for its affordable two-wheelers and the T1 is no exception. The current retail price on the DYU official website is only $799, making it a great choice for commuters who know about electric-assist bicycles and people who are curious about electric-assist bicycles. Indeed, on paper, its parameters and specifications can be said to be excellent compared to similar products.
Its most eye-catching element is its frame, which has a unique design and is made of cast magnesium alloy. Thanks to this magnesium frame, DYU claims a very friendly weight of 22.5kg while offering a payload capacity of up to 120kg (264lbs). That means it can easily be folded up, carried up a flight of stairs, loaded into a bus or high-speed train, or placed in the back of an SUV for transport.

In terms of performance, T1 is powered by a 250-watt rear hub motor. DYU aims to break through its weight class by equipping it with a torque sensor and accurately adjusting the amount of power assist.
Battery-wise, the T1 comes with a fairly compact 10-amp-hour, 36-volt battery pack that's removable for easy charging. As a result, DYU claims a single charge, pedal-assisted range of around 54km – certainly shorter than other large e-bikes, but keep in mind that the DYU T1 is intended as a city commuter rather than a sport tourer or mountain bike . Its foldable frame further adds to its stature for urban commuting, with a footprint of 850 x 480 x 780mm when folded.
Other components include a seven-speed Shimano drivetrain and mechanical disc brakes, and its low price makes it easy to forgive the fact that it doesn't have hydraulic disc brakes, which have become standard on entry-level e-bikes.
